Cursor Pro Pricing Changes Clarified with Refunds Offered

Cursor has addressed recent pricing changes for its Pro plan, offering refunds for unexpected charges.

Recent Pricing Changes and Communication Issues

Cursor recently implemented changes to its Pro plan pricing, which were not communicated as clearly as intended. The company has acknowledged this oversight and is taking responsibility for any confusion caused. In response, Cursor is offering refunds for any unexpected charges incurred by users over the past three weeks.

Details of the New Cursor Pro Plan

The revised Cursor Pro plan includes:

  • Unlimited usage of Tab and models in Auto mode only.
  • $20 of frontier model usage per month at API pricing.
  • An option to purchase additional frontier model usage at cost.

The previous description of model usage as "rate limits" has been clarified to reflect that it is actually a usage credit pool for the month. After the credit is exhausted, a short grace period is provided. Users who exceed their included usage and do not wish to use models in Auto can enable a spend limit to pay for additional usage at cost.

Rationale Behind the Changes

Cursor utilizes a combination of custom models and models from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and xAI. Previously, charges were based on the number of requests made, with a limit of 500 requests per month. New models, however, can consume more tokens per request, particularly for complex tasks. As a result, API-based pricing was introduced to better reflect the cost of these requests.

The transition from request-based pricing to $20 of included usage on Pro was accompanied by the introduction of unlimited usage of models when Auto is selected. Auto mode automatically routes to different frontier models based on capacity. It is important to note that "unlimited usage" applies only to Auto mode, while other models have at least $20 of included usage.

Addressing the Communication Gap

Cursor acknowledges that the rollout of these pricing changes was not handled effectively, leading to confusion among users. To address this, the company is offering refunds for unexpected usage charges incurred between June 16 and July 4. Users affected by this can contact pro-pricing@cursor.com for a full refund.

In summary, Cursor is taking steps to rectify the situation and ensure better communication and support for its users moving forward.
